Owner-Operator Trucking: Evaluate Net Earnings

Owner-operator trucking revenue is not the same as money available after business costs. Evaluate an opportunity by understanding the settlement calculation, the expenses you retain and the operating conditions behind the estimate. No earnings level is guaranteed by this guide.

Define the revenue figure

Ask whether an advertised number is gross freight revenue, your share before deductions or a settlement after specified deductions. Confirm the period it covers and whether fuel surcharge or other payments are included. Without those definitions, two attractive figures may not be comparable.

List costs outside the settlement

Identify equipment payments, maintenance, insurance and other expenses that remain your responsibility. Avoid subtracting the same charge twice if it has already been deducted. Keep actual records and distinguish a cash-flow estimate from a claim of final profit.

Account for non-revenue time

Consider empty miles, waiting and maintenance downtime when reviewing a proposed operating pattern. Ask how the agreement treats each situation. A higher loaded-mile figure does not necessarily create a better overall result.

Review the operating agreement

Clarify equipment responsibilities, payment timing, deduction schedules and the procedure for disputing a settlement. Ask which terms can change and how changes are communicated. Keep written terms with the offer rather than relying on a verbal summary.

Discuss a specific F/X opportunity

Use F/X's recruiting route to request current program details and a settlement explanation. Review its freight services for operating context, then ask how the particular lane and equipment requirements relate to the opportunity being offered.

Explore F/X freight services or review driver and owner-operator opportunities. Contact the appropriate team to confirm your next step.
